The ABCs of Medicare

Medicare is made up of several parts, each offering their own specific coverage. Understanding what each part of Medicare covers can help you make an informed decision about how much and what coverage is best suited for your specific needs. Below, the most common parts of Medicare are broken down by what coverage they offer.

Medicare Part A

Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A is hospital insurance. In general Medicare Part A covers inpatient care in a hospital, skilled nursing facility care, nursing home care, hospice care, and home health care.
Some specific uses of Medicare Part A include but are not limited to emergency room visits if you're admitted to the hospital, physical therapy, and long-term care hospital services.
Medicare Part A and Part B together form Original Medicare. If you're concerned that something is not covered in Medicare Part A continue reading to learn what Part B covers.

Medicare Part B

Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part B is medical insurance. In general, Medicare Part B covers medically necessary services and preventative services.
Some specific uses of Medicare Part B include services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, ambulance services, mental health, home health care, durable medical equipment like wheelchairs, and many preventative services like screenings and vaccines.
Medicare Part A and Part B together form Original Medicare. If you're concerned that something is not covered in Medicare Part B continue reading to learn what Part A covers.

Medicare Part C

Could save money and may include additional benefits

Medicare Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is a type of Medicare-approved health plan from a private company that you can choose to cover most of your Part A and Part B benefits instead of Original Medicare.
Part C plans may also include additional benefits and could help you see money.
Medicare Advantage plans generally have large provider networks and you may need to use a network provider for your care.
Medicare Advantage plans are tied to specific zip codes, so the availability of plans will vary based upon where you live.

Medicare Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. It helps cover costs for a wide range of prescription drugs and protects against higher costs.
If you have Medicare Parts A and B, you can add a Part D plan to existing coverage. Medicare Part C plans often have Part D/prescription drug benefits included.
